In A Coconut Shell
Despite being tucked away in a nice corner of suburban Kuala Lumpur, Nong & Jimmy's in Taman Cahaya, Ampang, is never short of patrons. So what's the catch here? Thai Seafood BBQ, that's what! Thai cuisine may be aplenty here, but the husband-and-wife-team has kept diners coming back for more with their rare offering of barbeque seafood. If your indication of a great eatery is by the size of its local crowd, then look no further than the sheer size of its weekday dinner crowd. And yes, every now and then you will find some Thai customers giving this place their seal of authenticity.

Not for the Light Hearted
Discard your idea of comfort when you head down here. Nestled in a corner of a huge car park space and placed under a zinc roof, this is one place where you are not required to dress to the nines. Plus, with that huge BBQ pit, you wouldn't want to smoke up your favourite dress!

What's Grilling

BBQ Crab - The main highlight here would have to be the BBQ Crab. One would not miss these giant red shells being grilled as you enter the restaurant. The shell is surprisingly easy to break, unleashing the succulent and sweet meat which was ?pressure cooked? inside its shell. Perfect to dip in sweet chili sauce or just savour it by its own.

Seafood Tom Yum - What Thai meal would be complete without this fiery and tangy fare? And boy, Nong & Jimmy's version in a claypot did not disappoint.

Char-grilled Squid - Do not let its dull colour turn you off, as this smoky dish had lots to offer. Grilled to perfection and thinly sliced, it is dipped into a special sweet and spicy sauce with crushed peanuts for a perfect light snack.
G.I Fried Rice - This must have been the best fried rice I have tasted in years. Its bland colour did no justice to this flavourful plate of rice. Simply flavoured with fish sauce, beaten egg and a dozen of shrimps, you will be surprised how fast this dish disappears!

Kerabu Mango - An interesting way of making Song Tham (mango salad) here. Rather than the wet version which I'm used to, the one here is mixed with grounded dried shrimp that gives the mango a drier texture, but nevertheless tastier!

Fish Cake - These breaded doughnut-looking things are great snacks and is a favourite amongst the kids. Though it's called a fish cake, don't be surprised to find some minced prawns in them.

Thai Yu Cha Kuai ? This deep fried savoury doughnut pastry is slightly different from our local version, as it uses glutinous rice flour, making the texture slightly chewy! The charming plate of pandan-kaya that came with it, gave this meal a perfectly sweet ending!

Pricing
A rather inexpensive meal, ranging from anywhere between RM30 - RM60 for two. It's a seafood meal in K.L., so you can't really complain. Just stay off the oh-so-tempting crabs if you're on a tight budget as they go for RM40/kg.
